Puppy Love

Growing up we always had cats. I never considered myself a dog person, and large dogs scared me. When we got married we moved into an apartment and we adopted a cat from the SPCA. I promised my husband that when we moved into a house we'd get a dog. It seemed like it would be a long time until that was possible so I'd have some time to talk him out of it. (Horrible, I know.)

We moved into our house on June 28th, 2011. On July 4th Daisy the beagle came home from the SPCA. I was still a little hesitant, but she was the perfect size and so sweet. She was three years old and had been used for breeding. When the couple who owned her retired they sent her off to the pound. She broke my heart.

Daisy wasn't totally housebroken because she hadn't been trained as a puppy. (She still sometimes has accidents, but no where near as many as when she first came home.) She doesn't really know how to walk on the leash - either we pull her or she pulls us - and even after an obedience course she still doesn't really sit, stay, or come on command. Despite all that, I can't imagine my life without her. Everywhere I go I'm covered in dog fur, but I don't care. There's absolutely nothing like coming home and having someone so excited to see you. She sleeps on the bed between my legs every night and as soon as hubby gets up she steals his pillow. We are both absolutely smitten.

One of the great things about being a dog owner is that we've explored  some local parks that we would never have visited. This summer we took several trips to Long Lake Provincial Park. It's only a 20 minute drive but you feel like you're way out in the woods. The first summer we had Daisy she wouldn't go near the water, but at Long Lake she got over her fear and on really warm days she and I would wade out into the lake.

Last week we checked out another park. We roamed the grounds around Uniacke Estate Museum Park in Mt. Uniacke. It was beautiful! We're planning on having pictures done there next month. I took a bunch of pictures while we were there, so I thought I'd share a few.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

  1. Daisy is adorable! Beagles are such great dogs =)

We've actually been thinking of getting a puppy. Not soon, but sometime in the future! The only problem is that dogs are such a time commitment, and we both work full time so it could be challenging. =/
